Persuasion as a Driving Force for Post-Deliberative Opinion Formation?

The doctoral project is concerned with the systematic analysis of issues, frames, and argumentative approaches in the online- and offline external communication of climate movements in Germany. The second research aims lies in the investigation of the persuasive effects of the identified argumentative schemes on individuals’ opinion formation about climate politics and attitudes on individual climate protection measures. The project is carried out in the theoretical context of deliberation. The exact mechanisms behind post-deliberative opinion formation still represent a black box in deliberation research. The overall question is how argumentative schemes in the public discourse determine and influence individual’s opinion formation in the sense of deliberative persuasion. The focus on climate movements allows for a comparison of various group policies, which significantly differ regarding their protest actions and argumentative practices. Moreover, climate protests and climate policies are controversial political issues which result in contentious and emotional public debates.
